Mozambique to repatriate 444 migrants

Maputo – Mozambique will soon repatriate a group of 444 illegal Asian immigrants who were sent back from South Africa after they entered the country illegally, a police spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Neighbouring South Africa sent the people back in buses on Saturday after they entered the country with tourist visas for Mozambique, said Maputo provincial police spokesperson Joao Machava.

The group originates from four countries. There are 268 Bangladeshis, 124 Pakistanis, 11 Indians and 41 Chinese,” Machava told AFP.

“They will leave group by group in the next few days,” he said, adding that the 11 Indians would be the first to leave on February 18.

In January police detained 93 Bangladeshis in the Mozambican capital, shortly after they entered the country.

A South African farmer also discovered 96 Bangladeshis hiding on his farm just across the border with Mozambique.

Promises of a better life in South Africa, the largest economy on the continent, attract scores of immigrants yearly, mostly from Africa.
