Madagascar coup announced

Antananarivo – A colonel who supported a politician’s takeover in Madagascar last year says he and other top-ranking officers have taken over the Indian Ocean island nation.

Colonel Charles Andrianasoavina was joined by the head of security of the president he helped oust last year when he made the declaration on Wednesday to reporters he called to a military base near the airport.

Andrianasoavina said nothing about the whereabouts of Andry Rajoelina, the politician who seized power last year. Rajoelina is believed to be in the capital.

The claim comes in the midst of a referendum to accept or reject a new constitution that calls for keeping Rajoelina in power indefinitely.

Voting is continuing, with few on the island aware of the officers’ declaration.
