In a statement Tuesday, Gem Diamonds Ltd and the Lesotho government said the diamond was found in late October in the Letseng mine. They say a 196-carat white diamond was found in the same mine in August.
Gem chief executive Clifford Elphick said Letseng, which is co-owned by Gem and the Lesotho kingdom, has frequently yielded “remarkable diamonds”.
Gem also has operations in Angola, Australia, Botswana, the Central African Republic, Dubai, Lesotho, Mauritius and Indonesia.
Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa.
