SA considers Olympic bid

Africa’s first soccer World Cup host, South Africa, believes it is possible to successfully host Olympics in the future given the experience and infrastructure the country now possess.

In an interview with Fifa on Friday, South Africa president Jacob Zuma said, “I don’t see why we can’t bid to host the Olympics in the future.”

He said the World Cup proved South Africa was capable, adding, “People are already talking about a possibility of bidding for (other) major events and we are supporting this. The Olympics are an example.”

Zuma said South Africa had the resources and infrastructure and an Olympic bid is “important for Africa.”

IOC president Jacques Rogge has said he will discuss a possible South African bid when he meets with Zuma at the World Cup final on July 11.

Local Organizing Committee chief executive officer Danny Jordan also a successful tournament could lead to the Olympics being hosted in Africa for the first time in 2020.

“The IOC decided to give South America its first Olympics, so the only continent now without an Olympics is the African continent, and therefore I think it’s something that the IOC certainly will have to begin to think about,” he said recently.
