The United Nations has protested the deportation of 36 refugees from Zambia to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a spokeswoman said.
Melissa Fleming from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) told journalists in Geneva that no explanation was given for the deportations to the volatile country.
The deportations were said to have followed a security crackdown on demonstrations by refugees in Zambia, but Fleming noted that violations of local laws should be handled through courts and not “forcible expulsions.”
Zambia hosts some 57,000 refugees from DR Congo, Rwanda, Somalia and other countries.
