Obama says no to ground assault in Somalia, Yemen

Noting that the “border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan remains the epicenter of al-Qaeda,” President Barack Obama says he has “no intention of sending US boots on the ground” to Yemen and Somalia.

“I do think it’s important to recognize that the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan remains the epicenter of al-Qaeda, their leadership, and their extremist allies,” he said in excerpts of an interview with People magazine released on Sunday.

He said both Yemen and Somalia harbor elements of the al-Qaeda, but said he prefers to help the governments of those countries deal with that threat.
