Aweys said fighting in Ramadan – the holiest month in the Islamic calendar – is ‘something good’ for the fighters who want to rule the Horn of African nation in accordance to strict interpretation of Islamic law.
“The fight against the foreign invaders and their local supporters will continue any month in the Islamic calendar, It’s even better for warriors in Ramadan,” he told reporters in Mogadishu.
He refuted claims that his group, Hizbul Islam is in talks with the UN-backed government led Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, his former close ally, adding that he will only talk with Ahmed when foreign troops leave the war-torn nation.
His remarks come a day after Ahmed called for ceasefire during the holy month. Somali insurgents have since rejected the truce and vowed to continue with the fighting.
