THE FIRST AFRICA-SOUTH AMERICA JOINT CONFERENCE OF MINISTERS IN CHARGE OF ENERGY

Addis Ababa, 13-17 July 2009- The First Africa-South America (ASA) Conference of Ministers in Charge of Energy kicked-off today, at the headquarters of the African Union Commission. The Ministers discussed various matters concerning energy and partnership until.

Speaking while opening the Conference, Professor Abubakar Sambo, Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Co-chair of the ASA Working Group on Transportation and Energy, reiterated the desire of Africa’s and South America’s Leaders to establish the requisite mechanisms to intensify cooperation between Africa and South America in infrastructure development, transport, energy and solid minerals.

 

The Professor remarked that establishing inter regional partnership and promoting investment in Africa by South America, in mining and energy sectors for harnessing fossil fuels, and renewable energy sources are prioritized as to meet various energy requirements. He further remarked that any programme that is developed under the stated framework will be implemented in the context of appropriate plan of action and follow up mechanisms as contained in the Abuja Declaration.

 

During the four-day meeting, the Ministers are expected, among others, to share information on the process of identification and selection of concrete projects and programs, to overview the overall strategy for cooperation and partnership in the energy sector under the ASA Cooperation Framework (ASACOF) and to consider and adopt the Draft Declaration and the Draft Plan of Action of the Ministers of Energy of Africa and South America.

 

It is worth to note that the Conference is an outcome of the First Africa-South America Summit held in Abuja, Nigeria, in November 2006.
