Sarah Flesher and the donations she acquired to help Burundian refugees. She’s taking that same spirit to Africa in July in order to help spread the word about the risk of HIV.
Before she moved to Tennessee from Oregon, Sarah Flesher, 26, had never thought of making pancakes to raise money. The first time she heard of the idea, "I thought it was weird," laughed Flesher, a financial counselor with 21st Mortgage. "In Oregon, pancake breakfasts are not a big, popular fundraiser!" However, since moving to the South three years ago, Flesher’s opinions on the pancake breakfast have changed. From 8-10 a.m. Saturday, she will host a pancake breakfast and raffle at Aubrey’s Restaurant on Papermill Drive to raise money to offset the cost of completing an internship in Africa to increase HIV awareness.
The beauty of the pancake breakfast is, "It’s inexpensive, and you can bring your family. It’s fun to go out to breakfast," she said. At $5 a ticket for all-you-can-eat pancakes, it’s also quite a bargain to benefit a good cause.
