Stay away from public rallies, Australians in Egypt warned

A spokesman for Foreign Minister Bob Carr says the 320 Australians registered as currently in Cairo will be contacted if travel warnings for the Egypt capital are increased.
“We have in the past (contacted Australians living in Cairo) and we would again if we had any additional specific travel advice to provide,” the spokesman said.

There are 961 Australians registered as currently in Egypt but the real figure is believed to be about 3000.
Official advice for those in the strife-torn country is at its second highest level, with tourists being warned to reconsider their need to travel.
“The biggest danger for Australians visiting Egypt would be the temptation to go and watch (street demonstrations),” the spokesman said.
“That’s of course a very dangerous thing to do (and) our biggest concern.”
Meanwhile, the travel advice for Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, has been lifted to its highest level with officials warning Australians to leave the city.
Tourists planning to travel to Beirut are being warned to change their travel plans after a bombing that has killed at least 20 and injured 260 others.
“The Department (of Foreign Affairs and Trade) considers it not safe for Australians, so we’re urging people to leave,” the spokesman said.
“We’re not evacuating them but we’re telling them they should get out of Beirut for the next short while.”
