Fire rips through Sydney church

A historic inner-west Sydney church has been gutted by fire.

Inspector Chris Sedgewick of the NSW Fire Brigade said crews were called to the Holy Trinity Church in Dulwich Hill just before 4am (AEST) on Sunday after receiving numerous triple-zero calls.

‘It was well alight when brigades arrived and half the roof was collapsed,’ he told AAP.

The building, dating to 1886, was severely damaged, he told AAP.

‘It’s totally burnt out inside, no floors, half the roof gone, the verandah’s come off the wall.

The church’s youth centre, housing a gym and boxing ring and home to a playgroup, was destroyed.

The job of firefighters was complicated when power lines came down during the fire, Inspector Sedgewick said.

There were no injuries and police forensic teams are investigating.
