Former prime minister John Howard is urging Australia to keep its anti-terror laws strong to combat terrorists who play a ‘long and patient game’.
On the eve of the 10th anniversary of the Bali bombings that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians, Mr Howard says the threat of terrorism won’t go away anytime soon.
But he’s told Macquarie Radio if there’s a positive legacy to come out of the bali bombings it’s that Australia and Indonesia began working together to combat the terror threat.
Mr Howard, who flies to Bali today to attend a memorial service, says the Bali bombings confronted Australia with the brutality of extreme Islamic terrorism and it was important from the start that Australia worked with the Indonesians.
He says Australia’s anti-terror laws are now better and stronger but they have to stay that way.
