Caltex plant closure set in stone

skynews 800237After discussions with staff and unions Caltex Australia has confirmed it will proceed with plans to close its Kurnell refinery in Sydney.

The company announced on July 26 it planned to convert the Kurnell refinery into a fuel import terminal, in response to financial pressures caused by cheap labour costs and newer, larger and more efficient refineries in Asia.

After consulting the refinery’s 330 employees about the planned changes, Caltex on Friday confirmed it would proceed with the plant closure and conversion.

Chief executive Julian Segal said employees would be offered assistance in finding new positions.

‘Caltex remains committed to supporting its people with the highest level of care, attention and respect,’ he said in a statement.

‘The company will continue to engage with our employees at Kurnell refinery to listen to their individual needs, and discuss retention, redeployment and retraining opportunities.’
