18 killed in eastern South Africa road accident

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Traffic officials say a crash involving a van and a truck in eastern South Africa has killed all 18 people aboard the two vehicles, including a baby.

In a statement, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said the driver of the van, which was carrying passengers from neighboring Mozambique to Johannesburg, veered from his lane and hit the truck head-on early Thursday.

Ndebele says both vehicles then caught fire. Ministry officials say it appears all those aboard both vehicles were killed.

The approaching holidays mean more South Africans are on the roads, and the number of deadly accidents often increases at this time of year.
