Shell says fire hits pipeline in Nigeria

Anglo-Dutch oil group Shell on Thursday reported a fire at a key crude supply pipeline in southern Nigeria following a leak, but added that the blaze has been put out.

“Yesterday, we heard about a fire incident from the Adibawa delivery line which had been shut down because of a leak arising from sabotage on November 8,” a spokesman of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), Precious Okolobo, told AFP.

“The fire has been extinguished”, he said, but noted that production has not resumed at the facility despite repair works being carried out following a second spill on November 12.

Oil spills occur regularly in Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, and are often caused by thieves seeking to steal crude for sale on the black market.

SPDC, a Shell subsidiary, operates a joint venture in Nigeria in which the state oil company NNPC has a major stake.

Shell has historically been the country’s largest producer.
