Sierra Leone outlaws 27 parties

Sierra Leone has struck 27 political parties off the register for failing to submit audited 2010 accounts, which leaves only four parties in the running for next year’s polls, a spokesman said Tuesday.

“We are going to seek an injunction from the Supreme Court to stop their operation,” Political Parties Registration Commisson (PPRC) chairman Judge Samuel Ademusu told reporters in Freetown.

“The parties have failed to report on their assets, liabilities, expenditure and present their audited accounts for the year 2010,” commission spokesman Lucien Momoh told AFP.

He said the parties had until March 31 to submit their accounts but were given a five-month extension they also failed to meet.

Among the 27 are the Revolutionary United Front Party of the late rebel leader Foday Sankoh and the People’s Liberation Party of fugitive junta leader Johnny Paul Koroma who is wanted by the UN-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone.

“The de-registration of these parties means that only four political parties so far will take part in the upcoming national elections in 2012,” Momoh said.

They are the ruling All People’s Congress (APC), the main opposition Sierra Leone People’s Party, the People’s Movement for Democratic Change and the National Democratic Alliance.

Two other groups, the United Democratic Movement and the Citizens Democratic Party have applied for registration.

National elections are scheduled for 2012.
