Ivory Coast uncovers large weapons caches

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) — Ivory Coast’s defense minister says security forces have uncovered large weapons caches bought by the country’s former strongman at three sites across the West African nation.

Paul Koffi Koffi said Tuesday authorities will work with U.N. peacekeepers to safely store the weapons. He says they were bought by ex-leader Laurent Gbagbo.

An army spokesman says caches including 20 to 30 tons of weapons and 78 aerial bombs were found in recent weeks.

Spokesman Lt. Jean-Marc Tago says the army will keep the useable ordnance and destroy the rest.

Gbagbo’s refusal to cede power after losing a November poll plunged the country into months of violence that killed thousands. He was arrested in April by forces loyal to President Alassane Ouattara.
