Don’t deport ex-Chad leader – AI

Johannesburg – Amnesty International on Saturday called on Senegal to prevent the return of former Chadian president Hissene Habre to his home country, where he faces the death penalty.

Senegal and Chad said this week the former president would be deported on Monday. He was knocked from power and forced into exile in 1990.

Habre is accused of committing atrocities during his eight-year rule and, in 2008, a Chadian court sentenced him to death in absentia.

Erwin van der Borght, the Africa director at the rights group, said Habre would not get a fair trial in Chad.

Sending him to face the death penalty “will not bring real justice to the thousands who suffered human rights violations during his rule”, said van der Borght.

Senegal had previously declined to prosecute Habre in its own courts, or to set up a regional ad-hoc tribunal for the former president. It also rejected extradition requests from Belgium.
