Tsvangirai’s spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka told Reuters the police had arrested Jameson Timba, a minister in Tsvangirai’s office, on Friday afternoon soon after his arrival from a visit to Spain.
Timba had accompanied Tsvangirai on the European trip.
“The minister has been arrested. The charges are unclear but we suspect it has something to do with threats issued by Zanu-PF officials,” Tamborinyoka said.
Police spokesperson Wayne Bvudzijena said he had no details on the arrest.
In the past week, officials from President Robert Mugabe‘s Zanu-PF party have been calling for the arrest of both Tsvangirai and Timba, accusing them of labelling the veteran ruler a liar over the outcome of a regional summit on Zimbabwe.
