Addressing a seminar on the fight against corruption, Joseph Kamara said “police traffic officers are the highest among corrupt officials with 85.6%involvement.”
They were trailed by customs officers at 77.6%, legal officers on 72.8% and tax officials on 64.5%.
Then came finance officials including accountants and auditors (62.3%) and court staff including bailiffs and clerks (61.8%).
Lower down the scale were administrative officers on 49% and human resource officials and managers on 44.9%.
Meanwhile Kamara’s Anti-Corruption Commission disclosed that only 1 000 out of the country’s 73 000 civil servants had declared their assets ahead of a deadline on Thursday.
Commission official Saidu Mansaray said the aim of the mandatory annual declaration was “to combat corruption, illicit enrichment and to identify and prevent conflict of interest while serving in the capacity of public officer”.
Officials declined to say whether President Ernest Koroma had declared his assets.
