The court sentenced the women on Sunday. The women included the mothers of the two girls, aged 10 and 14. They were convicted of negligence and of participating in the exploitation of minors for selling their children. Each woman was given six months’ imprisonment.
Mauritania outlawed slavery in 2007 but the practice persists because of lack of knowledge or resistance to its abolition. Slavery convictions remain rare.
The US State Department last year gave Mauritania a failing grade for not complying with minimum international standards to eliminate the trade in human beings and sexual slavery.
