Boko Haram, Nigeria cops in shoot-out

Maiduguri – Authorities say a shootout between suspected members of a radical Muslim sect and security forces has killed three people in northeastern Nigeria, including an 8-year-old boy.

Police say the shooting on Saturday night came as police and soldiers encountered two groups of suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in Maiduguri.

Borno state police commissioner Mohammed Abubakar said on Sunday that the suspected Boko Haram members shot first at the security forces manning roadblocks.

Abubakar says the 8-year-old child was playing nearby. He says six others suffered gunshot wounds in the firefight. No arrests were made.

Police accuse members of Boko Haram of committing a rash of killings in recent months.
