Maputo airport goes international

Maputo – Maputo airport has opened its new international wing to some passengers, with Mozambican national airline LAM now using the terminal, the state-owned newspaper Noticias reported on Friday.

“The Maputo Airport international terminal has been operating since Thursday in an experimental phase,” the paper said. “The goal is to test the new installations and staff.”

Initially, the terminal will only serve LAM flights, but will next open up to private Mozambican airline MEX. All international flights will begin using the new terminal by year-end, the paper said.

The new facility can accommodate 900 000 travellers per year, after a $75m overhaul contracted out to Chinese builder Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Corporation.

The new wing is a key part of government’s plans to boost the tourism industry in a country with 2 470km of warm Indian Ocean coast.

Construction delays slowed the completion of the new international wing, which was supposed to open in June ahead of the football World Cup in neighbouring South Africa.
