“The boy, aged 21 and eldest son of the deceased, confessed voluntarily that he was responsible for the death of his parents, his brothers and sister,” Kano police spokesperson Baba Mohammed told AFP.
Mohammed said the man used a “kitchen knife” to carry out the gruesome killings on Monday in Kano, northern Nigerian largest city, blaming economic frustrations for his action.
“Under interrogation, the boy told us that his father was dying and realising that if he died he would be left to cater for the family, he decided to butcher him, his mother and three other children,” Mohammed said.
Garba Bello, 54, a state security official, was hacked to death along with his wife and three of his children at their home.
The attack, previously blamed by police on unknown attackers, came amid a string of murders of security officials in parts of northern Nigeria, where suspected members of a radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram, have targetted mainly police personnel.
They also occurred as the country gears towards the January presidential elections.
