William Fitzgerald, a deputy assistant secretary of state, told reporters on Wednesday that the training would help ensure security in Nigeria, an OPEC-member nation that is a major crude oil supplier to the US.
Fitzgerald also said a recent government-sponsored amnesty programme for militants in the country’s oil-rich Niger Delta appears to be working.
Nigeria has been a major world oil producer for the last 50 years. Militants in the delta have targeted pipelines, kidnapped petroleum company workers and fought government troops since 2006. That violence drastically cut Nigeria’s crude production.
