Iran-Africa cooperation can establish lasting peace: Iran

TEHRAN (AFP) – Cooperation between Iran and Africa in different fields can establish sustainable peace in the region and the world, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Wednesday.

“Our economy, agriculture, industry and mines, health and sanitation and tourism can supplement one another,” Mottaki said at the end of two-day Iran-Africa conference, quoted by the ISNA news agency.

“Our future cooperation can help in establishing sustainable justice, peace and security in the region and the world,” he added.

“The Islamic republic undeniably considers any progress of the African continent to be in line with African people attaining their right and in line with sustainable peace and security in the world and reduction of the South-North gap.”

Mottaki also talked about the “need” for creating a “financial umbrella,” between Iran and African businesses.

“There is the need to create a financial umbrella by the Iranian and African private sectors. This financial umbrella can work as a consortium or even a joint company,” he said without elaborating.

Iran hosted the conference to discuss how it can assist in developing Africa.

On Tuesday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran and Africa wanted a new world order to replace the existing one, which has been created by “slave masters.”

The hardline president, who has often blamed the West for the ongoing economic crisis, said the current world order was created by “former colonisers and slave masters … to continue exploiting the wealth of African nations.”

He offered Iran’s cooperation in helping to develop Africa, saying the Islamic republic “has no limit” in aiding the continent, especially when it comes to exporting technology there.

Among those attending the conference were Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika and his Senegalese counterpart, Abdoulaye Wade, as well as ministers from several other African countries.
