French team probes ’94 Rwanda crash

Kigali – French investigators say they will try to find out who caused the plane crash that sparked Rwanda’s genocide in 1994.

Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundi’s president both died when their plane was shot down.

Monday’s statement by two French judges says they are heading a 17-person team that includes experts in aeronautics, ballistics, and topography.

A previous French investigation suggested that people close to current Rwandan President Paul Kagame may have been responsible.

The Rwandan government’s investigation released earlier this year suggested that the plane was shot down by Habyarimana’s allies as an excuse for starting the genocide. At least 500 000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered in 100 days.
