Investigations underway into Zindzi Mandela house shootin

Police have now confirmed that a case has been opened into a shooting at Zindzi Mandela’s home.

Three armed men attempted to hijack a vehicle carrying Madiba’s relatives in the driveway of his daughter’s home on Sunday evening, as they were returning from the former president’s birthday party.

The police’s Govindsamy Mariemuthoo would not say who opened the case; whether a VIP protection police officer was involved; or where the shooting took place.

Mariemuthoo would not even be drawn on the basics of what transpired that night.

“I can confirm that there was a shooting in Athol and we are busy with investigations at this stage. A docket was opened yesterday for investigations and we will find out why a case was not opened at the time of the shooting,” said Mariemuthoo.

Meanwhile, Eyewitness News understands the three men were armed with handguns and an R5 rifle.

A bodyguard who was driving them back from the elderly statesman’s birthday party opened fire and may have shot one of the suspects in the leg. The trio fled in a black vehicle.

A bullet-riddled car fitting the description was recovered in Honeydew the same evening.

Eyewitnesses said men in black suits, believed to be from the police’s VIP Unit, arrived at the Athol house and removed bullet casings from the driveway and then disappeared.
