Kenya: Nairobi University closed down

The Nairobi University of Kenya has been closed down indefinitely after a four-day student protest. Following heightened tension on campus on the heels of a controversial student union elections, the university senate on Tuesday sent all students home.

The Vice Chancellor of the University Professor George Magoha said in a circular to students that the closure affects all modules including regular and parallel students. However, postgraduate students were not affected by the closure, as some were writing examinations.

Meanwhile, the authorities have nullified the election process and suspended the Students Organization of Nairobi University until April 30 next year. A 20-member caretaker committee would run the students affairs.
