AU sends observers to Ethiopia

A 60 member multidisciplinary group of observers from the African Union Commission will be arriving in Ethiopia on May 16 to monitor that country’s legislative elections scheduled for May 23. The Mission will be led by His Excellency Sir Ketumile Masire former President of Botswana.

Other members of the Mission include Ambassadors, members of national parliaments, Pan-African parliamentarians, and high officials of election management bodies, members of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOC) of the AU, members of the African Human Rights Court, prominent individuals and members of civil society drawn from various African countries.

The AU Observer Mission will be expected to observe the Ethiopian elections in accordance with the AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa. 

In particular, guided by the African Union Guidelines for Election Observation and Monitoring the Mission will be expected to make an independent and impartial observation of the Ethiopian legislative elections.
