The 2 billion dollars will be dedicated to finance a long list of development projects which covers agriculture, animal breeding, housing and urban planning, water supply, health, education and rural development.
The conference will also discuss the establishment of a development bank in Sudan to receive all the grants and aids provided to the war-torn area. Egypt has initially called for holding the conference after the signing of Abuja Peace Agreement between the Sudanese government and the former rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) in May 2006.
However, the conference was delayed due to the continuation of war in the region. Egypt renewed the invitation in December 2009. According to a recent study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), one of every 100 women in Darfur died when giving birth, 607,000 infants each year can not live to see their first birthday, one doctor serves a population of 45,000, one midwife for 33,000 women and one health specialist for 7.5 million people.
The Sudanese government on March 18 inked in Doha a framework and ceasefire agreement with the Liberation and Justice Movement ( LJM), in a move toward a comprehensive ceasefire to end seven years of conflicts in Darfur.
The peace agreement came a few weeks after the Sudanese government and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), a key rebel group, signed a long-awaited temporary ceasefire in Doha.
