Floods in Kenya kill 21 people

Twenty one people have so far been confirmed dead and more than 70,000 lives are at risk in Kenya. About 30,000 people are also in desperate need for urgent humanitarian assistance as floods continue to ravage the country, Red Cross officials have said.

Abass Gullet, Secretary General for Kenya Red Cross society on Tuesday said urgent intervention is needed and appealed for help to contain the situation which he said will cause more havoc if the need is not urgently addressed.

Red Cross officials put the number of people who need assistance as results of droughts at 3.8 million Kenyan which it says are the worst affected by the ongoing rains.

So far the Kenya Red Cross has supplied blankets, soap and food to 6000 families in the Rift valley province which has been affected by the floods.

Kenya’s Meteorological department says the heavy rains are to continue up to the end of January.
