Lagos Begins Countdown to Nigeria at 50

In less than twelve months, Nigeria will mark 50 golden years of independence. While the federal government is yet to unveil a programme for the historic achievement, Lagos state government has already kicked off activities to count down to year 2010 independence anniversary.

The kick off of the programme was part of this year’s independence anniversary which celebrated Nigeria at 49. As part of the day’s activities, the state government officially launched the commemorative countdown to the anniversary.

It was a carnival atmosphere as eminent Nigerians and endless list of celebrities from all walks of life both from the public as well as private sectors converged at the high profile Civic Centre in Lagos to grace the 49th independence celebration which was used as a platform for the official launch of the Countdown to the 2010 Independence Day Carnival, tagged "INDDYCARN 2010" with the theme, Unity, Peace and Hope.

Speaking at the flag-off of the year-long commemorative celebration, the deputy governor of Lagos state, Mrs. Sarah Adebisi Sosan, who represented His Excellency, Governor Bababtunde Raji Fashola (SAN) urged Nigerians to look beyond current challenges of nationhood and focus on the bigger picture of galvanizing the enormous resources available to spur development in the country. She enjoined Nigerians to ‘dwell more on the positive aspects of our national life, rather than the continuous rumination over the past and what may have gone wrong with the system’.
