Nigerian-born British pregnant woman who escaped the death penalty in Laos for alleged drug trafficking has given birth to a baby girl. Samantha Orobator who had been in Phongton prison in Laos for almost a year became pregnant under circumstances which are still unclear.
She had refuted rumours that she was impregnated after being raped by prison officials. She said she had inseminated herself using sperm from a co-prisoner, British black magazine, The Voice, said.
She was facing Laos’ mandatory death penalty for drug smuggling, after Laotian officials said they found 680 grams of heroin on her at the capital’s airport. But she was sentenced to life imprisonment after becoming pregnant.
Samantha returned to the UK last August after Britain and Laos signed a prisoner transfer agreement.
Samantha was taken from Holloway Prison, a female-only prison in northern London, several weeks ago to have the baby in hospital, according to The Voice.
Her mother Jane said Samantha and the newborn baby are doing very well.
Many people across the UK have been calling on the release of Samantha. Last week Reprieve said she should be freed because her confession was coerced and her trial by Laotian authorities was a “sham.”
