4 illegal migrants killed on Egyptian-Israeli borders

Egyptian police shot and killed four African migrants as they tried to enter Israel illegally on Tuesday night, a security source reported on Wednesday.

The source said that three others, Ethiopians, were injured, one of them in a critical condition, and they were hospitalized in Al Arish hospital.

The police said guards would not fire unless the migrants refuse to stop and surrender themselves.

On Tuesday, Egyptian police arrested eight African illegal migrants at a security checkpoint in south of Ismalia (120 km northeast of Cairo) as they were on a bus on their way to Sinai.

The Egyptian-Israeli border is a transit route for African illegal migrants who want to pursue jobs in Tel Aviv. Egypt has stepped up patrols to stop such activities in recent years.

A total of 124 illegal migrants have been arrested in June and 1,016 in 2008, according to official statistics.
