12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics

SEYCHELLES’ three-member contingent for the 12th IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) World Championships in Athletics will leave this coming Monday for Berlin, Germany

Selected by the Seychelles Athletics Federation to represent the country, sprinters Alice Khan and Danny D’Souza are debutants at the biennial championships and they will line up in the starting blocks of the 100m races. As well as getting valuable experience, competing with the world’s best track and field athletes could be a good opportunity for them to raise themselves to another pedestal, provided they clock good times.

Khan will be in action on the second day – Sunday August 16 – and her wish is to improve her personal best (PB) of 12.51 seconds during the Berlin showpiece (August 15-23). The Seychelles’ women’s 100m record of 11.89 seconds is the property of Joanna Houareau, who set it on April 8, 2000 in Mauritius.

When he settles in the blocks of one of the many 100m heats on the opening day of competition, D’Souza, whose PB is 10.72 seconds, will be targeting Cyril Brioche’s 22-year-old 100m best mark of 10.51 seconds set on August 7, 1987, in Nairobi, Kenya, during the fourth All-Africa Games. Coach Arthur Agathine, who competed in the triple jump at the 1980 Olympic Games in the former Soviet Union, will accompany the two athletes. Television images from Berlin will be broadcast in more than 190 countries around the world.
