The Chinese WS-2 or WeiShi-2 (Guardian) multiple launch rocket system was revealed in 2008. It is aimed at export customers. Some sources claim that a number of these artillery rocket systems were exported to Sudan.
It is fitted with 6 launchers for 400-mm rockets. This artillery system has got no launching rails. Missiles are fired from containers. Rockets can be stored in these containers for years and do not require additional maintenance. A standard rocket is 7.3 m long and weights 1 285 kg. It can be equipped with various warheads, including anti-personnel, anti-armor or fuel air explosive. Rockets can be launched in single or salvo modes. These rockets have a simple inertial guidance system, but can also use indigenous satellite navigation system for mid-course guidance. There is also a capability to use terminal guidance for further increase of accuracy. Firing accuracy is 600 m at a maximum range. Maximum range of fire is 200 km, however some sources claim that it might be up to 350 km. Minimum range is 70 km.
The WS-2 artillery system has a preparation time of less than 12 minutes from travelling. Vehicle is equipped with hydraulically operates stabilizers, which are lowered to the ground before firing.
The WS-2 MLRS is based on the Taian TAS-5450 truck chassis. This 8×8 truck offers good cross country mobility. The TEL vehicle is usually supported by reloading vehicle, which is fitted with a crane and carries reload containers with rockets.
A typical battery of the WS-2 includes 6 TEL vehicles, 6 – 9 reloading vehicles and a single command vehicle. A single TEL vehicle can be also used independently.
