Chilean sailor murdered in Haitian capital

Haiti, Port-au-Prince – A non-commissioned naval officer assigned to the Chilean Embassy in Haiti was murdered during a robbery in Port-au-Prince, the Defense Ministry said.

Guillermo Enrique Arevalo Flores, a petty officer first class, was shot four times early Sunday, the ministry said. The murder, which occurred in Port-au-Prince’s Petionville district, is being investigated by the Haitian National Police. Arevalo was accosted by unidentified individuals and shot in the abdomen and arm outside a restaurant.
The sailor was taken to Lambert Sante Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, the ministry said. Arevalo was not part of the U.N. Mission for the Stabilization of Haiti, or Minustah, the ministry said. The Chilean Consulate and the Defense Attache’s Office in Haiti are making arrangements to repatriate the sailor’s remains.
