Interim ban on synthetic drugs extended

An interim national ban on synthetic drugs has been extended as the government works to implement a permanent prohibition.

A 60-day ban was introduced on June 18 following the death of 17-year-old Sydney boy Henry Kwan.

Kwan had taken synthetic LSD and, thinking he could fly, jumped from the third-floor balcony of his family’s north shore unit.

State governments rushed to outlaw the drug, except NSW, which introduced a 120-day ban.

‘The federal government will ensure there are no gaps in drug enforcement or product safety laws that could allow these synthetic drugs to return to the market,’ Consumer Affairs Minister David Bradbury said in a statement.
