Detainees to live in Tasmanian community

Immigration minister Tony Burke has announced he is looking at options in regards to moving hundreds of unaccompanied minors out of Tasmania’s Pontville Detention Centre and into the Hobart community.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has already moved 116 young detainees from the centre into community places since Mr Burke became Immigration Minister.

DIAC will now seek community places for the rest of the 275 youths currently housed at Pontville.

Greens Leader Christine Milne supports the move, but says there is plenty more to be done for the 2,000 young people across the country who remain housed in detention centres.

Mr Burke says his priority will be to first remove those who’ve been in detention the longest.
