Health costs biting poor Victorians

A New survey by a non-government organisation shows Victorians living in poverty are struggling to meet the costs of basic health care.

In a survey of more than 300 of its clients, Anglicare Victoria found more than half can’t afford dental treatment, while a quarter can’t pay for prescribed medicine.

Around 12 per cent of survey respondents can’t afford a trip to the doctor.

The study also found that 12.7 per cent of people in hardship can’t afford a substantial meal at least once a day, while 86 per cent wouldn’t be able to come up with 500 dollars in an emergency.

The report’s author, Dr Sarah Wise, says the survey shows government payments to people in need aren’t keeping up with the rising cost of living.
