The inferno broke out in a pile of scrap metal in Banksmeadow, at around 6.30pm on Saturday night.
More than 100 firefighters battled the flames, with concerns the blaze could spread to a nearby Orica, chemical plant.
‘Our focus was to protect the Orica plant and ensure the safety of that complex,’ a police spokesman said.
Crews were forced to break through the metal roller door of the plant to access the blaze.
It was brought under control about two hours later.
The cause is now under investigation.
