Melbourne dries out after record rain

Heavy rainfall has drenched large parts of Victoria with the wettest start to winter since 1904.

More than 50 millimetres of rain fell in central Melbourne while more than 100 millimetres fell in other parts of the state.

The SES says it fielded nearly 500 calls for help.

Flood warnings are in place for Melbourne’s Yarra river with the river expected to peak at around four metres at Yarra Glen.

While a moderate flood warning is in place for the Murray River up stream of Lake Hume.

The record rainfall has now eased – but more downpours are expected to drench Victoria’s northeast.
