No more abortions with RU486, Plibersek

Christian group FamilyVoice Australia says the availability of a cheap abortion drug could allow male partners of pregnant women to force them into abortions.

The group’s research officer Ros Phillips says the consequences could include cases of serious depression, and suicide attempts by the women.

But Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says government subsidies for the abortion drug RU486 won’t lead to more terminations.

Ms Plibersek says terminating a pregnancy is often already an extraordinarily difficult decision for most women.

The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee yesterday recommended RU486 be listed on the PBS.
