The Australian Red Cross Blood Service needs an extra 8000 donors to give blood between March 30 and April 5.
Spokeswoman Kathy Bowlen said the additional donations were essential to ensure the service had enough of the shortest-lived blood products, such as platelets.
‘Those products, platelets, are vital to the treatment of cancer patients,’ she said.
‘Platelets only last five days, so we can’t stockpile them.’
While many regular donors took time off over Easter, Ms Bowlen said the demand for blood never stopped.
And while they’d probably do so regardless, she also encouraged donors to tuck into some dark chocolate over Easter to replenish their iron stores.
