Prison closes after inmate deaths

Prisoner deaths have triggered the closure of the maximum security unit of a Brisbane prison.

The Arthur Gorrie Correction Centre Maximum Security Unit, which houses 18 prisoners, will close by March 1, following the deaths of two inmates.

Queensland Corrections says on its website maximum security prisoners will instead be split between the Brisbane Correction Centre and the Woodford Correction Centre, due to open in July.

This comes as the Queensland premier and attorney-general say they’ll fight to keep serial sex offender Robert John Fardon behind bars, even if they lose their initial appeal.

The 64-year-old twice-convicted rapist was to be freed yesterday afternoon, but the government won a last-ditch legal attempt to keep him temporarily behind bars until February 27, when a full appeal will be heard.

Premier Campbell Newman and Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie say the government can’t ignore the public outcry over his proposed release and will pull out all stops to protect the community.
