Police crackdown sees 40 arrested

More than 40 people have been arrested during a police operation targeting alcohol-related crime in Sydney’s CBD this weekend.

More than 260 officers were deployed each night during the fourth Operation Rushmore, which focused on Sydney’s entertainment precincts at The Rocks, George Street, Oxford Street and Kings Cross.

Running from Friday to Sunday, police inspected licensed premises, patrolled the surrounding streets as well as Sydney’s waterways.

Acting Superintendent Tony Bell said 43 people were arrested and 54 charges were laid.

‘Over the past two nights, police took action against a number of people who, as a result of the excessive consumption of alcohol, caused trouble and committed a number of violent offences,’ he said in a statement on Sunday.

‘Police will continue to run operations in these entertainment areas throughout the summer period.’
