Australian politicians agree on gun laws

Australian politicians say after the 28 deaths in the latest school shootings in the US, America must control its guns.

As news of 20 dead small children among the victims and footage of despairing parents in the small Connecticut town of Newtown dominated the screens on Saturday, politicians of all persuasions have come out saying guns in the US must be controlled.

Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop has told ABC TV she is sure US President, Barack Obama, and American politicians will want to debate the issue.

Malcolm Turnbull has called for action in a tweet, while Labor frontbencher, Chris Bowen, also wants Obama to tighten gun laws.

Former deputy prime minister, Tim Fischer, says a person is 15 times more likely to be shot dead in the US than in Australia.
