Emergency services were called to a property in Sierra Place, in Middleton Grange, about 11am (AEDT) on Sunday following reports of a blast.
A 32-year-old man suffered burns in the explosion and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution by officers from Green Valley local area command.
‘There were some concerns about the fumes that were emanating from the blaze,’ a police spokesman told AAP.
A crime scene has been established and specialist forensic officers were investigating.
Police are yet to confirm that the garage was being used as a drug laboratory.
