NSW police win 10 per cent pay rise

The state’s industrial umpire has granted NSW police a 10 per cent pay rise over three years.

Under the IRC ruling on Friday, police will get a 3.5 per cent wage rise in the year backdated to July 2011, and 3.2 per cent annually over the following two years.

skynews 795003Police were last year granted a one-off exemption from the NSW government’s contentious public-sector wage cap, which restricts annual pay increases to 2.5 per cent unless productivity improvements have been made.

NSW Police Association President Scott Weber said the IRC decision was a ‘realistic judgment’.

The association had wanted a five per cent annual pay rise.

‘I think in the present climate, and considering the financial budget of NSW it is a realistic decision, and we’re happy we’re above the 2.5 per cent wage cap,’ Mr Weber said.

NSW Treasurer and Industrial Relation Minister Mike Baird said the government accepted the IRC decision.

‘While our strong preference was that the IRC’s decision on police wages today came within the government’s wages policy of 2.5 per cent, it hasn’t, and we accept that,’ Mr Baird said in a statement.
